business meetingThe Commonwealth Management Institute has provided a valued avenue for professional development to the commonwealth’s midlevel managers for more than two decades. More than 1,800 managers in Virginia state government have taken the opportunity to sharpen their skills at CMI in order to more effectively implement public programs and policies.

The CMI is coordinated by VCU’s PMG in collaboration with CMI alumni through the Commonwealth Managers Association. The goal of the program is to enhance the skills and abilities of midlevel managers so they can operate in and adapt to the rapidly changing governmental environment and more effectively provide vital services to the citizens of Virginia. At the same time, the institute seeks to promote the exchange of ideas, information sharing and cooperation among program participants. Participants can earn 3.0 CEUs for this institute.

Institute objectives

The goal of the CMI is to strengthen managers’ abilities to:

  • Understand their dual role as managers and leaders and adapt their management style to maximize results.
  • Assess their strengths and developmental needs as leaders and managers.
  • Utilize techniques for group processes and strategic planning.
  • Reduce conflict and increase teamwork through an increased understanding of human behavior.
  • Communicate strategically in one-on-one and group situations.
  • Establish a network to promote interagency information sharing, cooperation and problem solving.

Upon acceptance to the CMI, please review the directions, places to stay and class checklist to help you prepare for the class. The CMI is a five-day program, opening with a two-hour orientation held in Richmond approximately six weeks prior to the session.
